The oil produced by the sebaceous glands provides nutrients for Propionibacterium acnes, which both increases the number of some receptors in skin cells and binds more readily to inflammatory factors, and breaks down the oil to form free fatty acids, which irritate the hair follicles and the area around them, causing an inflammatory response and local manifestations of lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules and abscesses.
