When ascites occurs in cirrhosis, it is not always necessary to pump water when treating it. In the case of a small amount of ascites, the ascites may subside by limiting water and sodium, or by taking oral diuretics. In case of large amount of ascites, the patient will have obvious abdominal distension and sometimes chest suffocation and shortness of breath. In order to quickly relieve the symptoms, the ascites may be pumped and released, and the ascites may be supplemented with albumin to promote diuresis. If it is a small amount of ascites or moderate amount of ascites, but the patient has obvious abdominal pain, suspicion of spontaneous peritonitis, or cirrhosis is easily combined with primary liver cancer, suspicion of cancer nodule rupture, then it is definitely necessary to aspirate ascites. The main purpose of ascites aspiration is to conduct laboratory tests to clarify the diagnosis, whether it is simple cirrhotic ascites, or combined with spontaneous peritonitis, or combined with ruptured cancer nodules. Some patients feel that they can’t pump, worrying that the more they pump the more ascites they have, but in fact, it is possible to pump and release ascites according to their condition.
