How long is the window period for AIDS?

The HIV window period is the time it takes for HIV to enter the body until it can be detected by the testing technology. The window period for HIV varies with different testing methods and needs to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Currently there are more means of HIV testing, such as the third generation HIV antibody test, the window period is usually about 6 weeks; the fourth generation HIV antibody and antigen test, it takes about 3-4 weeks; and the ordinary HIV load test, the test result is negative in about 2 weeks, it can be ruled out. And with the continuous improvement of testing technology, the window period of AIDS is also shortening. The window period does not mean that there is no HIV in the body, it is only temporarily undetected, and the HIV window period is also contagious.

After having a high-risk HIV contact behavior, patients are advised to go to the hospital’s infection department or dermatological venereal disease department for HIV testing once a month for 3 months to avoid missing the diagnosis.
