Regular reviews are needed after discharge to assess the child’s recovery, such as measuring head circumference, height and weight, and assessing motor, cognitive and behavioural abilities to detect neurodevelopmental abnormalities as early as possible.
The infant’s brain development is at a critical stage and early intervention can reduce the severity of the sequelae. The first review is usually 1 month after discharge, followed by follow-up every 1 to 2 months for half a year, every 3 months from half a year to 1 year, every 6 months from 1 year to 2 years, and every 6 months to a year thereafter until adolescence, depending on the circumstances.
