Long-term health harm to offspring from cesarean delivery?

With labor pains seemingly an insurmountable hurdle, more and more mothers-to-be are opting for C-sections as a method of delivery. The ever-improving techniques of C-section and suturing bring postoperative benefits to loving mothers, and the risks of a C-section seem to be much lower than those of a vaginal delivery. So are C-sections harmful to the children’s long-term health? In light of the increasing prevalence of C-sections, Prof. Norman from the Karolinska Institutet Hospital in Sweden recently wrote an article that sounds the alarm: C-sections may have a negative impact on the health of our next generation! The article reports that cesarean section rates are increasing worldwide, with rates of elective cesarean sections reaching over 50% and even 70% in some regions. When medical professionals work with pregnant women and their families in choosing the mode of delivery, the first consideration is the short-term risk of delivery, of which less than 2/3 of expectant mothers are informed that cesarean section may increase neonatal mortality during and after labor. As more and more generations are growing up after cesarean delivery, the long-term health problems of cesarean delivery on the offspring have been gradually recognized by the medical community. Epidemiological META analysis of a large sample of children born by cesarean section has shown that children born by cesarean section are at a higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases, such as food allergy, allergic rhinitis, allergy-specific idiosyncratic reactions, and asthma, and the risk of cesarean section-associated asthma in young children is as high as 20-25%; the risk of cesarean section-associated type 1 diabetes mellitus in children is as high as 20%; and the risk of ischemic necrosis of the head of the femur caused by cesarean section in children is also as high as 20%. The risk of ischemic necrosis in childhood due to cesarean section is also 36%. It can be seen that cesarean section should also have clear indications, mothers should be concerned about the impact of cesarean section on the long-term health of their offspring, carefully choose the mode of delivery, do not let the child lose at the starting line.
