The symptoms of coughing that occur with the common cold are mostly self-curing and it is impossible to say exactly which treatment is best.
Symptomatic treatment of cold and cough is the mainstay and antibiotics are generally not recommended, instead antipyretic bouts of anti-inflammatory drugs, cough suppressants and phlegmolytics can be used. Most of these medicines are over-the-counter (medicines that do not require a doctor’s prescription) and can be purchased by patients and their families at pharmacies. Stop smoking, take rest, drink plenty of fluids, keep the air circulating and prevent secondary bacterial infections. If necessary, antiviral/antibiotic treatment can also be used to combat the pathogen. If the cough persists, prompt medical attention is needed.
