A large proportion of sciatica is caused by a herniated lumbar disc. A herniated disc irritates and compresses the nerve roots, radiating along the sciatic nerve and causing pain, and is an important cause of sciatica. However, in turn, not all sciatica is caused by lumbar disc herniation, other lumbar spine pathologies, such as lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, any lumbar disease that can compress and stimulate the nerve roots can cause sciatica. In addition to lumbar diseases, local inflammation, adhesions and compression caused by trauma, or other conditions, such as compression caused by trauma, tumor or hyperplasia, can also stimulate the sciatic nerve and directly cause sciatic nerve pain, and then, although there is no lumbar spine pathology, more typical and severe sciatica can occur.
