What is senile vaginitis?

Age-related vaginitis is common in post-menopausal women. Due to the decline of ovarian function, estrogen level decreases, vaginal wall atrophy, mucous membrane becomes thinner, glycogen content in epithelial cells decreases, Ph value in vagina increases, local resistance decreases, pathogenic bacteria parents can easily invade and reproduce causing inflammation. The main symptoms are increased vaginal discharge, itching and burning sensation in the vulva. On examination, the vagina shows senile changes, epithelial atrophy, disappearance of folds, smooth and thin epithelium. The vaginal mucosa is congested with small bleeding spots and sometimes superficial ulcers are seen. Because of the local anatomical location, some elderly people also have recurrent urinary tract infections, with more serious consequences. Many patients tolerate it well or do not go to the hospital because it is difficult to talk about it, which can affect their quality of life for a long time and sometimes lead to serious consequences when the infection spreads. The lack of treatment usually leads some patients to give up or seek medical help. The pathogenesis of geriatric vaginitis is not complicated and it is usually easier to find the right treatment for a disease with a clear etiology and pathogenesis. For the pathogenesis of geriatric vaginitis, we use topical medication. The current observation is that topical medication for 10-14 days basically gives good results, and after that it is reviewed every three months, and the longest follow-up patient is now close to one year without recurrence. Patients with this type of disease can go to the gynecology department of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital to see Dr. Tieying Lai, who is basically in the outpatient clinic and can facilitate the treatment of patients. We have basically developed a standardized plan for the treatment of these patients. If you have recurrent urinary tract infections or a particularly complicated condition, you can come to my clinic for further evaluation and then we will make a reasonable treatment plan for you.
