What can a low vision specialist do to help people?

Our hospital has opened a low vision specialist since April of this year, with the initial intention of serving the majority of low vision patients. It is estimated that there are more than 10 million low vision patients in China, but very few of them can receive professional guidance from doctors or visual trainers. The main reason is that people do not know what is low vision and what is low vision rehabilitation? What is low vision? Low vision refers to both eyes, so if a person has normal vision in one eye and poor vision in the other, it cannot be called low vision. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the standard is: low vision is the best corrected visual acuity of both eyes with glasses, and the best corrected visual acuity of the good eye is more than 0.05 and less than 0.3. What is low vision rehabilitation? Low vision rehabilitation is to take various useful measures to improve visual function, to maximize the use of residual vision, to reduce the impact of visual disability, and to enable people with visual disability to return to society. The main method of low vision rehabilitation is the use of appropriate visual aids and corresponding training. Our low vision clinic is based on the doctor’s accurate judgment of the condition, through various questionnaires and specialized examinations to understand the visual function status, life needs and expectations of low vision patients, using all resources (currently with the strong support of Hunan Disabled Persons’ Federation) to provide personalized visual aids, and in the near future, will provide in-depth vision-related training to improve the quality of life, including: reading, walking, psychological communication, etc. Psychological communication and exchange, etc. We also welcome all charities to participate in our low vision rehabilitation project, hoping to bring some freedom to the less bright world of our patients!
