Iodine-131 ablation is a very mature method for the eradication of hyperthyroidism in clinical application. It is characterized by wide indications, good efficacy, low recurrence rate, few side effects, simplicity and safety. Large sample studies and over 70 years of clinical practice have confirmed that this treatment has no adverse effects on fertility and does not increase the incidence of tumors. It is preferred by approximately 70% of internists in the United States for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. In many other countries and regions around the world, it is also gaining popularity among physicians and patients. In order for you to receive timely, efficient and standardized treatment and to recover smoothly as soon as possible, please follow the above mentioned treatment procedures and do the following: 1. Avoid iodine-containing drugs and foods and stop using antithyroid drugs for a certain period of time before treatment: stop using methimazole (such as Tabazol, Sage, etc.) for more than 3 days; stop using propylthiouracil for more than 2 weeks. Please be sure to stop smoking, alcohol, tea, coffee, etc. 2.Patients who are pregnant or lactating are strictly prohibited to undergo this treatment. 3. Fasting for more than 2 hours before and after oral iodine-131 on the day of treatment, and drinking water is allowed. Iodine-131 is usually administered to patients on Wednesdays around 10:00 a.m., so you should keep an empty stomach on the day of treatment. Please cooperate with your doctor as he/she will inform you and check the relevant information when taking Iodine-131. 4. You should strictly follow the doctor’s instructions before and after treatment, including supplementary medication, follow-up recommendations and related regulations. 5. It is advisable to share meals within 2 weeks after treatment to avoid contamination of food and dishes by saliva, avoid close contact with others, and live in a single room if possible. For 1 month after treatment, it is advisable to rest properly, prevent infection, avoid mental stimulation, do not press on the thyroid gland, and prevent urine contamination. 6. After the treatment, follow up at the appointed time (usually 1 month for the first three follow-up visits, and then extended to 3 months) (please call 1 week in advance to make an appointment). The unique method I use (individualized iodine-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism – dose customization) takes into account all currently recognized factors influencing efficacy. The risk of occurrence and severity of hypothyroidism is strictly controlled while ensuring a high cure rate. This method has a single cure rate of about 90% in all patients treated with iodine-131 (70% of normal nail function + 20% of hypothyroidism), and about 10% of patients need multiple courses to be cured. Patients with hypothyroidism should follow up their thyroid function and adjust the dosage of thyroxine (eugenol, etc.) regularly under the guidance of their doctor. 8. If you develop hyperthyroidism crisis (irritability, nausea, profuse sweating, body temperature >38℃, heart rate >140 beats/min and other serious discomfort) or precursor of crisis, please seek immediate medical treatment.
