Does myopia run in families?

Myopia has the potential to be inherited, but it is not necessarily inherited whenever myopia is present. The heritability of myopia is complex and accurate results cannot be obtained, only rough estimates can be achieved. Generally high myopia, that is, myopia of 600 degrees or more, is more likely to be inherited. If both men and women are highly myopic, the likelihood of both having a child with myopia is about 90% or more. A child born from a union with a highly myopic partner who is not myopic but is simply a carrier of the myopia gene has a 50% chance of being myopic. But genetics is not the only factor that causes myopia. It is also related to environmental factors such as poor lighting, small handwriting, lack of outdoor activities, and factors such as prolonged close eye use such as playing with cell phones, watching TV, and working at a desk. Both parents should take care of eye protection to slow down the rate of gradient deepening and reduce the possibility of inheritance after pregnancy. For children, it is important to develop eye protection habits from an early age and reduce other triggers.
