When Premature Infants Need Fundus Screening

   According to the Guidelines for the Treatment of Oxygen and Prevention of Retinopathy of Prematurity issued by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China in 2004, the ophthalmology department of Beijing Children’s Hospital Zhang Chengh
Retinopathy screening criteria, premature infants with the following conditions should go to a professional medical institution for fundus screening
1. for preterm and low birth weight infants with birth weight <2000g, fundus screening should be started and followed up until the peripheral retina is vascularized (usually until 3-6 months after birth)
2. screening may be appropriately extended for preterm infants with severe disease
3. the first screening should begin at 4-6 weeks postnatal or 32 weeks corrected gestational age. The examination should be performed by an ophthalmologist with sufficient experience and knowledge of the subject.
