How can scarring be prevented?

Keloid scars are the common regression of human injuries and are the result of normal tissue healing. However, once a scar proliferates it can cause a lot of trouble in life, especially proliferative keloid scars or keloids that occur in exposed areas such as the face. Here is an important piece of information for your attention: prevention is more important than treatment for keloid scar growths. The importance of prevention is reflected in two aspects: 1. Prevention of keloid growths is more effective than treatment. The purpose of scar prevention is to reduce the chance of transformation of keloid scars into abnormal keloid scars. When the clinical diagnosis of hyperplastic keloid scars or keloid scars is clear prevention turns into treatment. 2. The timing of the diagnosis of keloid hyperplasia affects the prognosis of keloid scars. The consensus of many experts is that the treatment of hyperplastic keloid scars or keloids is most effective when started when the scar is immature. Therefore, it is crucial to make a diagnosis of keloid scar growth as early as possible, and early diagnosis is part of prevention. Therefore, every effort should be made to prevent keloid scarring. Means of scar prevention: 1. Prevent post-traumatic or post-operative infections as much as possible, one should actively cooperate with the doctor’s dressing change treatment, keep the wound clean, and apply antibiotics for heavily contaminated wounds; 2. For patients with high risk factors for keloid growth (e.g., those with a history of keloid growth, those who underwent breast and chest surgery) the following preventive measures should be carried out: a. Fix the wound with hypoallergenic tape for a few weeks after surgery to resist b. Silicone gel is the first-line method of scar prophylaxis and should be applied as soon as possible after the incision has healed and continuously for at least 12 hours a day for three months; c. Intra-scar hormone injections are the second-line method of scar prophylaxis and are generally used in patients with more severe scarring. 3. For patients without high-risk factors, the wound should be kept clean and followed up regularly. Therefore, it is recommended to follow the medical advice given by the doctor for scar prevention after surgery or injury; it is not optional, but vital.
