1. 2. Reasons not accompanied by pain:

(2) Stones do not cause ureteral spasm: renal stone colic is caused by the movement of smaller stones in the ureter, stimulating the ureter to cause spasm. The stones are not discharged into the ureter without causing spasm of the ureter, and will not produce symptoms of pain.
