Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by sudden, transient and recurrent seizures with a variety of clinical manifestations. It is a common and frequent disease in neurology, and is closely related to psychiatry. According to statistics, there are about 9 million people with epilepsy in China, and about 400,000 new epilepsy patients are diagnosed and treated every year, so it is crucial to diagnose and treat epilepsy. This makes the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy challenging. Epilepsy is an abnormal discharge in the brain. Mental disorders may be a manifestation of epilepsy. There are different classifications of seizure disorders. There are two types of seizures according to whether the consciousness is clear or not: psychomotor seizures, automatism, hazy state, and wandering state. In the case of clear consciousness seizures, there are personality changes, chronic delusional states, mood changes, etc. Patients with various types of mental disorders often have major, minor, or other types of seizures in their medical history, and the diagnosis is generally not difficult. Reliable and detailed medical history and physical examination and ancillary tests such as EEG are helpful in diagnosis. The choice of treatment should be based on the type of seizure the patient is having. The goals of treatment are seizure freedom, few adverse effects, improved quality of life, and long-term safety of the medication. Treatment of seizures should also be considered along with treatment for the cause.
