Menstruation is the cyclical shedding and bleeding of the endometrium that accompanies the cyclical changes of the ovaries. A regular menstrual cycle is an important sign of maturity in reproductive function. The first menstrual flow is called menarche. The age of menarche is usually between 13 and 14 years old, but it may be as early as 11 or as late as 15 years old. Normal menstruation is cyclical in nature. The first day of bleeding is the beginning of the menstrual cycle, and the interval between the first day of menstruation is called a menstrual cycle. It is usually 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. The duration of each menstrual period is called a menstrual cycle, usually 2 to 8 days, with an average of 4 to 6 days. For example, the incidence of menstrual disorders (hypomenorrhea, scanty menstruation or amenorrhea, prolonged menstrual cycle, etc.) is significantly higher in women with epilepsy than in the normal population; long-term use of valproic acid can increase androgen secretion and cause polycystic changes in the ovaries, which can evolve into polycystic ovary syndrome. The first menstruation and the menstrual period may have predictive or suggestive value for seizures to worsen. Some women with epilepsy have a close clinical relationship between their seizures and their menstrual cycle, called menstrual epilepsy. In addition to classical antiepileptic drugs, hormonal therapy can be used to improve the prognosis of menstrual epilepsy; in women of childbearing age, menstrual epilepsy is also an important predictor of reduced seizure frequency during pregnancy. The diagnosis of menstrual epilepsy currently relies on a detailed history, necessary ancillary tests and its menstrual-seizure diary, especially the menstrual-seizure diary, which can provide an important reference value for clinicians to correctly diagnose menstrual epilepsy. The epilepsy diary is detailed in the attachment. You can download the diary and fill it out, and bring it with you to your follow-up appointment to help your doctor better understand your condition!
