Methylprednisolone sodium succinate is used in the treatment of pneumonia, mainly for the more pronounced and severe inflammation of the lungs. It is a glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties and also has some anti-shock efficacy. For example, the common bacterial pneumonia presents as a diffuse, purulent infection with a very pronounced inflammatory response and a large amount of inflammatory, purulent secretions exuding from the alveoli. At this time the patient will also experience wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and a persistently elevated body temperature. Intravenous sodium methylprednisolone succinate drip can be used as an option to alleviate the symptoms and to reduce the patient’s toxic reaction. This glucocorticoid is especially useful for toxic shock, or shock pneumonia, to promote stabilization of vital signs and reduce the inflammatory response.
