The most common cause may be left heart failure, leading to pulmonary stasis and causing acute dyspnoea, sometimes coughing up pink frothy sputum, which can be relieved by sitting. In addition, asthma also often has acute attacks at night or in the early hours of the morning, some of which may resolve on their own.
