Fatty liver can be categorized as “fat qi”, “accumulation evidence”, “dystocia (pain in the region of the ribs)” and “obstruction in the abdomen” in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The treatment of fatty liver in TCM needs to recognize and treat the symptoms. 1. Liver depression and qi stagnation (poor qi and blood transportation of the liver, emotional depression): discomfort in the liver area, swelling and pain in both hypochondriacs, emotional depression and boredom, fondness for tai shi, belching (hiccups) at times, reduced intake of food, irregular bowel movements (abnormal bowel movements), women’s menstrual disorders, breast distension and pain, and so on. It can be treated with the addition of Chai Hu Shu Hepatosan. 2. Liver Depression and Spleen Deficiency: distension and tightness in the abdomen and ribs, depression, fatigue, abdominal pain and diarrhea, abdominal distension, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, and desire for rest. It can be used with the addition and subtraction of Puan Shen. 3. Phlegm-dampness internal obstruction (phlegm and dampness obstructing the internal organs and meridians): obesity, discomfort or distension in the right side of the body, drowsiness and heaviness around the body, sticky stools, fullness in the epigastrium (abdomen), tiredness and weakness, dullness (lack of appetite, reduced food intake), dizziness and nausea. Er Chen Tang can be used to add and subtract. If there is any discomfort, it is recommended to consult a doctor. If medication is needed, it should be identified by a doctor and standardized treatment should be followed.
