What is the cause of a swollen and drooping uvula?

Most often it is considered to be an overgrown uvula. Long-term chronic irritation such as snoring, acid reflux and smoking can cause hyperplasia of the connective tissue of the uvula, muscle hypertrophy and restrictive oedema, resulting in an elongated uvula. In addition, congenital developmental abnormalities are also a cause. A consultation with the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery is recommended for a definitive diagnosis.
