Letting epilepsy go can cause a child’s intelligence to decline

The child, the future of the country, the hope of the family heritage. This means an intelligent child, or at least one who is not intellectually disabled. Both doctors and parents know the extent of the intellectual damage caused by epilepsy. Doctors’ attitudes are mostly limited to verbal guidance and admonition, with no action to help. The parents’ attitude is more helpless and unhelpful because there is no one to show them a clear path. Cognitive therapy for children with epilepsy is not new in developed countries, but it is deserted in China because of the government’s absolute monopoly on the allocation of medical resources, which leads to a tendency to focus on the most profitable part of medical activities, with little investment in prevention and rehabilitation. The fact is, however, that millions of children each year are unable to complete their schooling and in severe cases are unable to care for themselves because of epilepsy. This, combined with the fact that most physicians are only concerned with epilepsy control, irrational medication or excessive surgery, further contributes to increased cognitive impairment in a significant number of affected children. After the age of 13, there is no room to salvage the child’s intelligence. Before that, the damage can be undone as much as possible through regular treatment and rehabilitation. How can this be done? The first thing is to identify the cause as early as possible. Some diseases related to genes and genetic metabolism should be detected and treated as early as possible; the second thing is to use anti-epileptic drugs rationally, and choose drugs with less cognitive impairment as possible under the premise of controlling epilepsy. The fourth is the formal preoperative evaluation, which must be done by a high level epilepsy center, as the consequences of forced surgery are even more tragic if not suitable for surgery. The active treatment requires one-on-one intellectual training with the help of artificial and software, while the passive one can improve the function of neural network with the help of transcranial magnetic stimulation. In short, children cannot be delayed! In this regard, medical institutions are still not doing a good job, and in the next ten or even twenty years, hopefully, there will be improvements!
