Bromocriptine is mainly used in the treatment of pituitary tumors, but it is not effective for other types of pituitary tumors. Bromocriptine can reduce the size of the tumor in about 75% of patients within 6-8 weeks of taking the drug, but it is difficult to disappear completely. However, bromocriptine is not effective in all cases of lactating pituitary tumors, and in about 1% of patients, the tumor will continue to grow. If bromocriptine is taken for a long time to treat lactating pituitary tumors, it may reduce the cure rate for subsequent surgery. Patients with microadenomas taking bromocriptine for 1 year can have a 50% reduction in surgical cure rate due to fibrosis, so if surgical treatment is to be performed, it needs to be done within 6 months of bromocriptine treatment to improve the surgical cure rate.
