Patients presenting with pain in the heart of the ear accompanied by pain in the throat often have symptoms associated with acute inflammation of the external ear canal or middle ear, accompanied by acute inflammation of the throat. Acute inflammation of the ear may be associated with acute inflammation of the pharynx, most commonly when the patient has a sore throat due to cold and other factors, resulting in acute pharyngitis or acute tonsillitis. Inflammation can enter the middle ear cavity retrogradely through the nasopharynx of the eustachian tube, leading to acute inflammation of the middle ear and even acute purulent otitis media, which can then lead to perforation of the eardrum and even pus flowing from the ear canal. Some patients may also suffer from acute inflammation of the pharynx or tonsils, resulting in more intense pain in the throat and radiating ear pain, but no acute inflammation of the ear is found during the examination.
