Can breast nodules become cancerous and do they need surgery?

With the increase in awareness of medical checkups and the popularity of imaging, more and more women are wearing the “breast nodule” hat. In fact, nodules are not a disease, but a general term for all small lumps found by touch or imaging. The main concern of the patient is the possibility of cancer and the need for surgery. My advice is that first you need to see what kind of diagnostic procedure you have gone through. If you were seen in a regular hospital with a breast specialist and the doctor told you that the nodule is a cyst, or a solid nodule but does not require biopsy or surgery, then you can rest assured that the likelihood of this condition being malignant is very low. However, it is still important to insist on a 6-monthly review, and if nothing changes in 2 years, then it is not malignant. If you are seen in a regular hospital with a breast specialist and the doctor thinks it is a cyst, or a solid nodule, but recommends you have surgery, then you need to weigh that. This is because even in regular hospitals the indications for surgery for benign conditions are not the same. Cysts do not usually require surgery unless they are very large. If the doctor considers it to be a fibroadenoma, then surgery is limited to two cases: 1. very large, my personal indication is 3cm; 2. growing very fast, if it increases by more than 20% in half a year and exceeds 5mm, this case should be suspected of a wrong diagnosis and also requires surgery. Try not to choose surgical treatment for multiple small fibroids. If you were examined in an informal hospital, or the hospital where the examination was done does not have a breast specialist at all, it is recommended that you go to a specialist for examination. There are different tests for different age groups, and the doctor will also need to decide whether to do other imaging tests based on the results of the examination, and eventually decide whether a puncture biopsy is needed based on whether it is suspicious. Breast nodules are now a very common problem, the reason why they are common is that on the one hand, people have become more aware of screening and will go for checkups if there is a problem, and on the other hand, the resolution of the equipment has also improved, not necessarily because more people have breast nodules nowadays. Therefore, if you are unfortunate enough to be labeled as a “breast nodule”, especially those that can be observed, don’t be overly anxious.
