At the Peking University People’s Hospital Breast Center, clinicians and diagnostic imaging physicians are two in one. While we do comprehensive treatment for breast diseases, especially breast cancer, we are also responsible for diagnostic breast imaging, such as breast ultrasound examination and diagnosis. As a breast specialist, I have found in my clinical practice that breast ultrasound can be helpful in establishing a diagnosis and developing a follow-up treatment plan for many breast diseases. The advantages of ultrasound are that it is inexpensive, non-invasive, and repeatable. Perhaps because of the popularity of color ultrasound, many people find it a bit disconcerting to just lie down, rub something on the breast, and then use a probe to shine a light on it to determine if there is a problem or if there is cancer growing. Indeed, there is no test that is foolproof, but the value of breast ultrasound for the diagnosis of breast disease cannot be ignored. So what kind of test is ultrasound? The principle of ultrasound diagnosis is: the use of ultrasound instrument will be launched into the body and ultrasound waves in the tissue propagation, when the ultrasound through a variety of different tissues, will produce different amplitude of reflection and refraction, these echo signals can be processed, can be obtained acoustic image, according to the acoustic image shows the size of the lesion, the shape of the contour of the border, the type of echoes, echo internal conditions and attenuation of the back of the situation and so on, to determine the nature of the lesion. Ultrasound examination of breast can distinguish cystic and substantial lesions, and can often find 1cm or even smaller masses under the operation of experienced doctors. By analyzing the characteristics of the masses on the ultrasound map and the blood flow, the early detection rate of breast cancer can be maximized and unnecessary biopsies can be avoided; What kind of people need to undergo breast ultrasound examination? Theoretically all people can have breast ultrasound. I recommend breast ultrasound to anyone who is planning to have a mammogram for their routine health checkups. Because it is non-invasive, non-radioactive, and painless, it is recommended as a routine procedure. Breast ultrasound is also recommended for young people with dense breast tissue. For the former, mammography requires a certain amount of radiation, so we do not routinely perform it without special suspicion; for the latter, the diagnostic rate of molybdenum X-ray has decreased significantly, and ultrasound is also needed to make up for it. For us Chinese women, dense gland types are more common, so breast ultrasound is especially important. As mentioned above, no one test can do everything, breast ultrasound also has its shortcomings and limitations, but in the hands of experienced doctors breast ultrasound can become our breast disease diagnosis of “clairvoyance”, let us make full use of the powerful weapons of modern medicine, let breast ultrasound become our defense of breast health force.
