Reporter Gao Jing lumbar pain is the most common symptom of the elderly, many patients without detailed examination, often think they are wearing the “arthritis” hat, self-medication treatment. The professor reminded that the same symptoms are not necessarily the same disease, orthopedic clinics often encounter patients with pain in the front of the knee joint, claiming to be “arthritis”, but detailed examination reveals that most people suffer from patellofemoral joint disorder. The patellofemoral disorder is a typical patellofemoral disorder patient. A few years ago she found herself with knee pain when walking up and down the stairs, but because she walked on a flat road like a normal person without any pain, she did not pay attention to it. She had been treated for arthritis, with physical therapy and massage, but after two years, the pain worsened, and even walking on a flat road began to hurt at the kneecap, so she was afraid to walk, so she sought medical help and received a diagnosis. Professor Wang Weiming introduced that there are few patients with similar conditions as Ms. Fang, clinically, 80% of patients with painful “arthritis” in the front of the knee are suffering from patellofemoral joint disorder. The patella is what we often call the “kneecap,” and because patients have no symptoms when walking on a flat road, it is easy to ignore. In addition to the lack of arthroscopic technology in the past, this disease is often plausibly diagnosed as “chondromalacia patellae”, resulting in misdiagnosis. ”Professor Wang Weiming said that there are two reasons for patellofemoral joint disorder. First, because the soft tissue around the patella is hypertrophic, so that at a certain angle of flexion and extension activities with the patella occurs extrusion and collision, that is, “bones caught in the meat”; second, the patella on both sides of the ligament strength imbalance. These two points lead to knee pain when doing knee flexion, because the patella and the surrounding soft tissues are not squeezed when walking on a flat road, so there is no discomfort in the early stage. Patients should avoid weight-bearing knee flexion action Professor Wang introduced that if detected early, the disease can be completely recovered through conservative treatment. Therefore, patients should be reminded that if pain occurs in the knee joint when doing knee flexion, they should immediately do conservative treatment, such as physical therapy and reducing knee flexion. However, if the symptoms persist for more than three months and the squeezed soft tissues are basically unrecoverable, the patient needs to undergo minimally invasive surgery under arthroscopy to remove the hypertrophic soft tissues or release the contracted ligaments. In addition, patients should be careful to avoid rehabilitation of knee flexion movements or activities (such as mountain climbing), as this will repeatedly reinforce the stimulation and lead to irreversible damage to the soft tissues, ligaments and articular surface cartilage around the patella, and eventually patients will have impairment in their daily activities. He concluded by reminding that athletes and manual workers are at high risk for this disease and that special attention should be paid to the presence of early symptoms for early diagnosis and treatment.
