Do you need to remove the fixation after internal fixation of femoral neck fracture

Generally, the internal fixation does not need to be removed after femoral neck fracture surgery, but it may be removed in some cases. If the patient is still afraid to lie on the affected side 1 year after surgery due to pain caused by the protruding internal fixation, or if the protruding internal fixation causes pain or discomfort against the skin and subcutaneous tissue, the internal fixation may be considered for removal. However, the internal fixation can be removed only if the fracture is confirmed to be completely healed after clinical and radiographic examinations. After removal of the internal fixation, it is recommended to avoid weight bearing for 3 months after removal of the internal fixation, as the nail holes need time to heal, and to avoid falling again. Postoperative follow-up X-rays should be performed regularly to closely observe whether there are any distant complications of femoral head necrosis, as well as other related complications.
