You cannot determine whether your baby is deficient in calcium based on the results of a trace element test alone. Because the calcium measured by fingertip blood is the concentration of calcium ions in the blood, not the real calcium in the bones. Therefore, in order to see if your baby is calcium deficient, you must come for a physical examination on a regular basis and analyze whether your baby’s weight and height growth is within the normal range and whether there are signs of rickets. Because blood calcium must be maintained in the normal range, if the concentration of calcium ions in the blood is too low will appear hypocalcemic convulsions. To prevent hypocalcemic convulsions, the body self-regulates by breaking down the calcium in the bones into the blood to maintain the blood calcium concentration. Therefore, the baby will still have calcium deficiency. Never stop giving your baby calcium and cod liver oil after reading the trace element test! Please consult your physician at the time of your physical examination for specific calcium supplementation instructions.
