Foreign body sensation in the pharynx is a common condition in ENT. Some patients often have mental symptoms such as anxiety, fear and impatience, and their normal work and study are seriously affected by the fear of tumor in the pharynx, in fact, there are many causes of foreign body sensation in the pharynx, and not only tumor can cause it. Foreign body sensation in the pharynx refers to the abnormal sensation of foreign body, occlusion, pressure, scratching, dryness, burning and other discomfort in the pharynx or throat, which may be caused by the slight stimulation of sensory nerve endings from pharyngeal plexus to pharyngeal wall, or through nerve reflex. Fatigue of throat muscles can also cause foreign body sensation in the pharynx. Due to inflammation and stimulation by tobacco and alcohol or improper use of the voice, the uncoordinated movement of throat muscles can cause fatigue, resulting in strain on the throat muscles and foreign body sensation. Foreign body sensation in the pharynx is a common symptom of chronic pharyngitis. In addition to chronic pharyngitis, many diseases can have similar symptoms. 1, pharyngeal lesions: direct stimulation of the sensory nerve endings of the pharyngeal wall causes this symptom, such as pharyngitis, tonsillar disease, hyperechogenicity, pharyngeal tumors, pharyngeal keratosis, etc.; nasal cavity, sinus is the adjacent organs of the pharynx, when suffering from sinusitis, especially when accompanied by nasal septal deviation, sinus secretions backflow to the nasopharynx, stimulating the pharyngeal mucosa and lead to foreign body sensation. 2, pharynx adjacent parts of the lesion: stimulation due to pharyngeal wall movement, but also often cause foreign body sensation in the pharynx. For example, cervical lymphadenitis, carotid arteritis, hyperostosis, goiter, cervical hyperplasia, esophageal diverticulum, esophageal cancer, etc.; reflux gastritis, esophagitis, acidic contents of the stomach or bile acid reflux directly damage the pharynx can also lead to foreign body sensation in the pharynx. 3.Distal site lesions: through the vagus nerve or other related nerve reflexes and transmission can also cause the symptoms, such as gastroduodenal ulcer, gastric prolapse, hypertension, heart disease, etc. 4, functional lesions: no organic causes can be found, often called pharyngeal heterosensitivity, related to mental factors, plant nervous disorders, endocrine dysfunction and metabolic disorders. Folk often commonly called “plum kernel gas”. Plum kernel gas, Chinese medicine refers to the disease characterized by foreign body sensation in the pharynx, such as plum kernel obstruction, coughing and swallowing, and is often called neurosis or hysteria in Western medicine. Although it does not affect the normal physiological functions such as breathing and swallowing, the foreign body sensation in the throat often makes the patient worried and overburdened with mental burden, and even has serious cancer-phobia, which affects normal work and life, and its symptoms are mostly aggravated when the mood is uncomfortable and depressed. The symptoms are often aggravated or alleviated by emotional changes, often accompanied by mental depression, distress, chest distension, anorexia, insomnia, weight loss, etc. Some may also appear menstrual irregularities. Due to the complex etiology of foreign body sensation in the pharynx, relevant examinations should be done according to the accompanying symptoms of the patient in order to diagnose the cause and treat the symptoms, such as blind medication, long-term use of antibiotics, the symptoms are not relieved, but to aggravate the gastrointestinal disease and psychological burden, which is not conducive to the treatment of the disease.
