Can haemochromatosis be cured?

Whether haemochromatosis can be cured depends largely on its type.
Generally hereditary haemochromatosis cannot be cured, but if detected early, diagnosed early and treated promptly, patients have a better prognosis, with a long-term survival rate of up to 70%. Some patients with secondary haemochromatosis caused by thalassaemia, aplastic anaemia or repeated blood transfusions have the potential for clinical cure. If the primary disease is actively treated or blood transfusions are reduced, combined with iron removal therapy, patients’ symptoms can be effectively improved or even reach a clinically curable state.
