Does esophageal diverticulum heal on its own?

A diverticulum is not self-healing and is an irreversible, benign lesion that manifests itself as a layer or whole layer of the oesophagus protruding outwards to form a pouch. The main danger is that as food enters the stomach, it can partially enter the diverticulum, causing symptoms such as acid reflux, chest pain, or a burning sensation in the stomach. Small diverticula are usually mild and have little impact on the patient’s health and do not require treatment and can be reviewed regularly. Larger diverticula, however, may need to be treated surgically to achieve a cure.
