Why is it important to train the function of the eustachian tube in the treatment of otitis media?

Many patients with otitis media, especially those with exudative otitis media, have had poor results with long-term treatment… However, I think that the majority of patients with simple exudative otitis media are still treated very well. Here I would like to talk about the relationship between the eustachian tube and otitis media, and why and how to train the function of the eustachian tube. Why? The middle ear cavity is a blind cavity with only one exit (note that the lateral wall of the middle ear, also known as the tympanic membrane, is normally closed). In normal times, the mastoid airspace and secretions from the middle ear secrete through its only outlet to the nasopharynx (eustachian tube pharynx). In case of inflammation, especially in patients with exudative otitis media, many people cannot drain the exudate and accumulate in the middle ear cavity due to local inflammation or abnormal function of the blocked eustachian tube, so that the inflammation of the middle ear does not get better. How to train? The most common method is to pinch the nose and blow the air: take a deep breath, close your mouth tightly, pinch your nose, and blow the gas in your lungs in the direction of your nose (positive pressure), if your ears feel a “boom” and your ears feel a little change in the sound, you are blowing the air successfully. On the contrary, if the ear is blown up and you want to call the eardrum back, how do you do it? Just pinch your nose and swallow a mouthful of saliva! What should I do if I can’t blow? 1, nasal drops to assist treatment: commonly used ephedrine and antibiotic nasal drops such as nasal drops treatment (note that not ear drops) 2, oral medication to assist 3, if necessary, the eustachian tube blowing surgery (hospital treatment) 4, tympanic membrane puncture and tube placement treatment, etc. Patients friends first try it yourself! Once the function of the eustachian tube is trained, your middle ear “sewer” is repaired, and otitis media will be better treated.
