Eye drops with preservatives are not “unsafe”

A few days ago an online article claimed that eye drops with preservatives were unsafe, raising doubts and concerns among the public. The person in charge of the relevant departments of the State Food and Drug Administration pointed out that in order to prevent eye preparations from being contaminated by microorganisms during use, most eye drops, especially multi-dose eye drops, that is, eye drops that need to be used repeatedly, need to add antibacterial agents, commonly known as preservatives, usually at a level of one to two ten thousandths. The reason for adding preservatives to eye drops is that today’s technology cannot solve the problem of eye drops that are prone to spoilage and deterioration after opening. The added preservatives are not harmful to the eyes as long as they meet the relevant standards.
