Patients with high blood pressure need to limit alcohol, regardless of what they drink. Chronic excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for the development of hypertension, and also increases the chance of developing other cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of hypertension increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. About 5% to 10% of hypertensive patients are caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Blood pressure decreases for a short period of time after a small amount of alcohol is consumed, but then increases. Heavy alcohol consumption stimulates sympathetic excitation, increases the heart rate, raises blood pressure and increases blood pressure volatility. There is substantial evidence that excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (including sudden cardiac death) and other related diseases (renal failure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, impaired cognitive function, and dementia). Mortality from stroke is three times higher in heavy drinkers than in infrequent drinkers. Alcohol contains 7 kcal per gram but no other nutrients, so heavy drinking can cause obesity and malnutrition. Alcohol consumption also counteracts the antihypertensive effect of medications, making blood pressure less controllable; after abstaining from alcohol, in addition to a decrease in blood pressure, the patient’s effect on medication is greatly improved. Although it has been reported that small amounts of alcohol may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, it is difficult to reach a consensus on the relationship between different amounts of alcohol and health, so small amounts of alcohol are not advocated to prevent coronary heart disease. Therefore, it is best for patients with hypertension not to drink alcohol. If drinking alcohol, a small amount is recommended. Men drink less than 100~150ml of wine (equivalent to 2~3 taels), or less than 250~500ml of beer (half a catty~1 catty), or less than 25?50ml of white wine (half a tael~1 tael); women drink half as much, and pregnant women do not drink alcohol.
