What are the main treatments for meningioma?

As with other intracranial tumors, the main treatment options for meningiomas are surgery and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy needs to be considered for some malignant meningiomas. Surgical treatment yields different prognosis depending on factors such as tumor site, blood supply, patient’s physical condition and surgeon’s skill. Some meningiomas can be completely cured by surgery alone, such as convex meningiomas when they reach primary resection (total removal of the tumor and surrounding invaded dura mater and skull). Radiotherapy has been used to treat meningioma at home and abroad, including two-dimensional radiotherapy, three-dimensional radiotherapy and interstitial radiotherapy. Two-dimensional radiotherapy and interstitial radiotherapy are rarely used to treat meningioma now, but three-dimensional radiotherapy has been widely used in clinical practice, including gamma knife, X-knife (isocenter linear gas pedal), three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, heavy particle therapy, etc. Especially the use of gamma knife has enabled more and more meningioma patients to avoid tumor recurrence. The use of gamma knife, in particular, has enabled more and more meningioma patients to avoid the pain caused by tumor recurrence. Minimally invasive treatment of meningioma requires a thorough understanding of meningioma, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of the means of treating meningioma. Only then can we provide individualized minimally invasive treatment plans for different patients. In layman’s terms, this means surgery where surgery is indicated and radiation therapy where radiation therapy is indicated.
