Is meningioma treatable?

Meningiomas are curable. Generally, meningiomas are benign tumors, and as long as the first surgery is relatively clean and complete, there will be few recurrences after surgery. Meningioma is divided into intracranial meningioma and ectopic meningioma. For intracranial meningioma, most of them are benign tumors and can be cured by surgical excision. Moreover, the histological recurrence rate of benign meningiomas is 3% at 5 years and 21% at 25 years after surgery. Therefore, radical surgery should be pursued for those who can achieve total resection to reduce recurrence. However, in some cases, meningiomas tend to have malignant manifestations, including those like meningeal sarcoma, and some meningiomas are not completely removed during the meningioma removal process, such as those around the greater occipital foramen, or not all meningiomas are removed for physical reasons, or for family reasons such as financial difficulties. Then radiotherapy can be used later to control the tumor and reduce the risk of recurrence. However, recurrence rates of 50%-80% have been reported in patients with WHO grade III disease. Recurrence and reoperation of meningiomas greatly reduces the quality and length of survival. Most meningiomas, especially convex meningiomas or meningiomas with significant envelope, are well resected and do not require postoperative radiation therapy. As long as the tumor is detected early and the nature of the pathology is clear, good treatment results can be obtained.
