Treatment of benign epilepsy with central-temporal spikes in children

Chen Fuyong, Department of Neurosurgery, The First Hospital of Fujian Medical University: Hello! There is a possibility of benign epilepsy with central-temporal spikes in children. It is an epileptic syndrome of childhood that presents with tonic-clonic seizures of focal origin occurring at night and simple partial seizures occurring during the daytime, with EEG manifesting spike-wave discharges in the central-middle temporal region. The seizures usually resolve spontaneously and do not recur after the age of 16 years, and neurological development is usually normal. Treatment can be left untreated if the seizures are just 1-2 times, and if medication is needed, trilostane (oxcarbazepine) can be chosen for treatment. Most patients can gradually reduce and stop the medication after 1-2 years after seizure control.
