It is not advisable to use tools that do not provide rigid support for the spine and extremities, such as a soft mattress or a chair or stool, to carry a patient with a spinal fracture. The most serious complication for patients with spinal fractures is the re-displacement of the fracture or dislocation of the adjacent segment, resulting in severe compression of the posterior dura, spinal cord or nerve roots. These softer tools do not provide good rigid support for the spinal fracture and can easily cause misalignment of the fracture, which can result in compression of important tissues in the posterior spinal canal, leading to serious consequences such as paraplegia or quadriplegia. The appropriate tool for moving a patient with a spinal fracture should be a rigid bed or a tool that can assist in immobilizing the neck, lumbar region, and both lower extremities.
