Patients mainly present with unusual nervousness and fear about AIDS, or the possibility that they may have it, with a tendency towards avoidance. Most patients are able to recognise that these fears are excessive and unreasonable, but are still unable to control them. To reduce anxiety, patients will do everything possible to avoid behaviour, such as avoiding physical contact with others.
