When should I see a Chinese doctor? This is a question. My answer is that TCM treatment should be used throughout the cancer treatment process, and is suitable for the treatment of cancer at any stage of early, middle or late stage. Of course, some people may experience and feel as if only TCM doctors say this, while some specialists in Western medicine – especially surgeons – often hold a negative or even spiteful attitude towards TCM. In this regard, as a Chinese medicine practitioner, the author can only say that they are too short-sighted. For your understanding, here are a few brief remarks on the outline of Western medicine treatment. Before surgery, if the patient is still relatively healthy (this is a rare case), it does not matter if he or she takes Chinese medicine or not; if the patient is treated with radiotherapy before surgery, he or she can refer to Chinese medicine with radiotherapy. After surgery, the digestive system often does not recover quickly and the body’s immune function also suffers a big blow, so the intervention of Chinese medicine treatment will be of great help to the patient. The application of TCM can alleviate certain adverse reactions after surgery, such as low fever, abdominal distension, poor appetite and poor bowel movement, and restore the function of the spleen and stomach as early as possible; through TCM conditioning, the body will recover as soon as possible, so that it can face the cruel blows that may follow – radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The main purpose of TCM during radiotherapy is to help patients maintain their vital energy and to reduce the toxic effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. After the surgery and radiotherapy, what should I do next? The answer is: continue to adhere to TCM treatment to prevent cancer metastasis and recurrence. The reason why cancer is regarded as a terminal disease is because of this phenomenon of metastasis and recurrence. Once this phenomenon occurs, most people are theoretically incurable. There is always a percentage of people who have already undergone surgery and/or radiotherapy who will go down this path, and Western medicine has no effective way to prevent this phenomenon, relying solely on the results of natural selection. We are now trying to solve this problem through TCM, and there are already studies that show that TCM therapy may reduce the rate of recurrence and metastasis, and all we have to do is to further explore the rules of this, in order to go to the next level and give a real peace of mind to those patients who have cancer.
