Just two months ago, Mr. Zhou in Liuzhou, Guangxi Province, could hardly breathe: an 8-cm-long tumor, 1.8 cm wide at its widest point, had almost blocked his trachea. Fortunately, the thoracic surgeons of Wuhan University People’s Hospital made a bold innovation and reconstructed a new trachea for him. 22nd review showed that his lung capacity has returned to normal. Since last year, 42-year-old Mr. Zhou began chronic coughing, the local hospital repeatedly diagnosed as bronchitis. From the beginning of this year, he consciously breathing difficulties, walking a little faster to have to gasp. In mid-June, Mr. Zhou came to Wuhan University People’s Hospital, Department of Thoracic Surgery for treatment. Professor Huang Jie found that Mr. Zhou’s trachea had a rare and huge tumor. The entire tumor was about the size of a cylindrical disposable lighter, blocking 4/5 of the entire trachea, and if it was not surgically removed in time, he would have suffocated to death due to the tumor’s crazy growth and blockage of the trachea. The international community of thoracic surgery has unanimously recognized that the limit of resection of human trachea is 6 cm, otherwise it will not be able to anastomosis. But Mr. Zhou’s trachea tumor was 8 cm long, which gave the doctors a problem. The two professors, Huang Jie and Hu Hao, decided to break the taboo and take the risk of trying a new technique of replacing the trachea with an artificial blood vessel. in the surgery at the end of June, the two experts first removed the tumor, and then anastomosed the larynx and the bronchus with a 12-cm-long artificial blood vessel to reconstruct a trachea for him. Considering that the artificial blood vessel might collapse under pressure, the doctors implanted a stent in the new trachea and fixed it. The whole operation took 3 hours and was successfully completed, and the patient was discharged from the hospital two weeks later. On the 22nd review, Mr. Zhou’s new trachea’s shape and lung capacity are no different from normal people, and the function of daily activities has been fully restored. According to the search, trachea reconstruction with “artificial blood vessel + external stent” has not been reported in China.
