What does being HPV positive in women mean?

HPV positivity in women means that the body carries HPV, the human papillomavirus, and persistent HPV infection can cause cervical intraepithelial lesions and cervical cancer, with persistent high-risk HPV infection being the most important factor contributing to the development of cervical cancer. HPV testing is usually used in combination with cervical cytology for cervical cancer screening in women over 25 years of age. HPV has multiple genotypes, and HPV infection of different genotypes can lead to different clinical lesions. HPV is classified into high-risk and low-risk types based on biological characteristics and oncogenic potential.1. High-risk HPV types: including HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39 and other types are associated with the occurrence of cervical cancer and cervical intraepithelial lesions of high severity, especially HPV 16 and 18 positive types should be taken seriously; 2. Low-risk HPV: such as HPV 6, 11, 42, 43, 44 and other types are mainly associated with mild squamous epithelial lesions and genitourinary warts and recurrent respiratory polyps, often causing warts and low-grade intraepithelial lesions of the cervix. The vast majority of women infected with HPV can clear the virus automatically within 1 year, and can turn negative within 3-4 months of clearing the virus, so there is no need to worry too much. For patients who are persistently infected and cannot turn negative, regular checkups and early detection and treatment of lesions at an early stage have a better prognosis.
