There is no specific treatment for foot and mouth disease and symptomatic treatment is the mainstay. Patients are admitted to hospital for isolation and observation, and are given treatments such as cooling and mouth cleaning to prevent secondary infections. The symptoms of the disease are mild and most patients recover spontaneously without local scarring. However, fatalities have been reported in severe cases.
