How do people become infected with foot-and-mouth disease?

Foot and mouth disease mainly affects even-hoofed livestock such as cattle, sheep and pigs, but humans are less susceptible to the disease. The disease can occur in humans when they come into direct contact with the secretions or excretions of diseased animals, or when they ingest food or water contaminated by diseased animals or inhale virus-containing dust through airborne droplets. The virus can also be excreted in humans, but is largely non-contagious from person to person.
