The number one cause of death among dialysis patients is cardiovascular disease, and it is estimated that as many as one million patients may be dependent on dialysis in China. Dialysis patients can safely undergo cardiac surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass and valve replacement with perfect perioperative management. International experience has been reported for years, but similar cases from China are extremely rare, with mostly 1-2 individual cases reported. Peking Union Medical College Hospital has successfully performed cardiac surgery on several dialysis-dependent patients in recent years with safe and effective procedures, of which the long-term outcomes were good.
