How to prevent urinary stones

In the hot summer, the number of patients suffering from urinary stone disease also increases with the hot weather, and the number of patients seeking treatment for stone disease in the urology department of the hospital is significantly higher than in other seasons. Dr. Jiang Yueqing, chief physician of urology department of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, pointed out: “In hot weather, if people sweat a lot and drink less water, coupled with dietary problems, these factors together will cause a burden on the urinary system and cause the occurrence of stones. Therefore, people should drink more water in summer, and should not wait until they are very thirsty.” The first time I saw her, she was in the middle of a kidney, and she had a 1.5 cm stone in her right kidney. Fearing surgery, she opted for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. However, after two treatments, her kidney stone did not decrease at all and the symptoms of back pain persisted. Ms. Wang came to Shanghai Nine People’s Hospital for urology treatment. After examination, her kidney stone was located in the diverticulum of the kidney, just like a thick “wall” around the stone, even if the stone was broken, it could not be discharged. Therefore, the experts suggested to use the most advanced ureteroscopic technology to go deep inside the kidney to open the channels blocking the stones and expel them. During the surgery, the doctor found that Ms. Wang’s kidney stone was located in a small closed calyx of the kidney, known as a “diverticulum stone”, which had only a small pinhole-like hole connected to the renal pelvis. The surgeon uses a laser to punch a hole in the “wall” around the stone, which not only removes the obstacle to the stone’s discharge channel, but also removes the stone completely with the special stone extraction tool under the ureteroscope, solving the “stubborn” kidney stone in one go. Since the ureteroscope enters the kidney through the natural lumen of the human body, there is no wound and it is non-invasive, so Ms. Wang was able to move around like a normal person on the second day after the operation. Director Jiang pointed out that untreated urinary stones such as kidney stones and urinary tract stones can harm the kidneys causing pain in the lower back and abdomen, frequent urination and blood in urine. If kidney stones cause fluid accumulation in the renal pelvis for too long, obstruction of urination and blockage of the above parts can cause excessive pressure to the point of reduced blood flow to the kidneys, which can produce renal tubular degeneration and necrosis, and kidney atrophy and shrinkage, allowing the kidneys to decline in function or even lose function completely, kidney failure and uremia. Therefore, it is important to actively seek medical attention when suffering from urinary stones. ”Kidney stone is a common and frequent disease of the urinary system, the hot summer is the season of high incidence of kidney stones, there is no need to worry too much when you have kidney stones, as long as you choose the right treatment to remove the stones.” Director Jiang introduced, “Due to the different locations and sizes of kidney stones, there are various ways to treat them. Generally speaking, small kidney stones can be treated by drinking more water or using lithotriptic drugs to promote the discharge of stones. While large stones need to be broken into small stones by various means to expel them, and the endoscopic ‘hole-punching’ stone extraction technique is a good way to deal with kidney stones.” Director Jiang especially pointed out that factors such as excessive protein intake, insufficient water intake and sedentary less exercise are the main factors leading to the high incidence of urinary stones in summer, so the prevention of kidney stones should start from the daily habits of diet and exercise and other parties – first, the human body should drink no less than 2,000 ml of water per day. The best drinks, in addition to plain water, chrysanthemum tea, mung bean soup, green tea, etc., which have the effect of clearing heat and detoxification, can reduce the occurrence of kidney stones. Second, change the bad habits and diet, light diet, control the intake of drinks, beer, etc.; low salt, low protein diet, less strong tea, spinach, nuts and other foods rich in oxalic acid.
