Can a negative cerebrospinal fluid test result rule out brain metastases?

Cerebrospinal fluid examination to look for cancer cells is only used as a qualitative diagnosis for the occurrence of brain metastases. False negative results are high, meaning that even if the cerebrospinal fluid test is negative, the diagnosis of brain metastases cannot be ruled out.
A combination of tests such as cranial magnetic resonance imaging is needed to rule out the diagnosis.
