Proper understanding of “open road drugs”

In order to prevent the over-priced poultices from causing gastrointestinal congestion, Chinese medicine practitioners used to decoct herbal tonics for 1~2 weeks before the poultices were taken, which is commonly known as “open-way medicine”. The function of the herbal medicine is to strengthen the spleen and help transport, eliminate stagnation (phlegm and dampness, blood stasis, food stagnation, etc.) or test for drug allergy. The following people are recommended to “open the way” for soup before taking the cream formula: (1) those who take the cream formula directly for the first time; (2) those who have not taken Chinese medicine soup in the past three months and want to take the cream formula for tonic; (3) those who feel deficient, but recently have abdominal distension, constipation, recurrent mouth ulcers, thick and greasy tongue coating, and have “internal fire”. “(4) those who suffer from various chronic diseases, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, etc., with more complicated conditions, need to use open-way medicine to test their internal deficiency and determine the focus of medicine; (5) those who are cautious by nature or sensitive to drugs, are prone to uncomfortable reactions in the process of taking the cream, so it is appropriate to use open-way medicine first.
