What is the key question in cancer treatment? Is it simply to destroy cancer cells? The answer is of course not. The key issue in treating cancer is how to change the “cancer state”, changing the internal environment where cancer cells live. Perhaps many people have heard the question: “Can Chinese medicine really fight cancer?” The answer should be in the affirmative. According to the relevant survey: 70-80% of cancer patients take Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine has become an important part of clinical treatment of cancer. In traditional ancient books, there has been knowledge about cancer for a long time, and the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine has recognized cancer and put forward some names of tumor diseases, such as xie tumor, tendon tumor, intestinal tumor, stone obstruction, accumulation, diaphragm, etc., and described the symptoms of these diseases systematically. The first word “cancer” was mentioned in the “Renzai Zhizai’s Explanatory Notes”, saying that “cancer is a high up and deep down, the shape of a rock cave, with a tired pendant and a deep hidden poisonous root.” Of course, there are many medical cases about the treatment of cancer in ancient times. In “Menghe Fei’s Medical Case”, there is a medical case recorded. It was about Zhang Danshu, the governor of Guangxi, who was suffering from “choking and hiccup”, which is now known as esophageal cancer, not eating, chest and abdominal pain, and asked Dr. Fei to consult and treat him. Prescription: Ginseng, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Oyster, Huang Lian, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Semen Parviflorum, Mai Dong, Fried Bamboo Roo. After taking the above prescription for 10 payments, the condition improved, the pain in the chest and abdomen was greatly reduced, and the diet gradually improved. After the above formula was reduced, another 10 payments were taken, and the appetite was better and he was able to eat normally. Later, due to anger and eating too much greasy food, the disease relapsed and was finally not cured! This medical case is very detailed, especially in the recovery phase, one must avoid emotional changes and dietary situations, otherwise, one may end up halfway. Speaking of “Menghe Fei’s Medical Case”, it is necessary to talk about Menghe Town and the famous healer Fei Boxiong. The town of Menghe is located northwest of Changzhou, not far from the south bank of the Yangzi River, and became a town because of the Menghe River, a school of Chinese medicine in the south, which emerged from here in the mid-19th century. In those days, the town of Menghe was full of famous doctors, and all kinds of disciplines were available. According to the local chronicles, when people came to Menghe for treatment, “the river boats were like weaving, and the sound of sculling stretched for dozens of miles”. Due to the drive of medicine, the town’s various industries flourished and the economy became rich, and this kind of linkage between medicine and social economy was almost only seen in Menghe. The Qing dynasty historical manuscript also recorded the medical science of Menghe, and the historian selected Fei Boxiong from the medical science of Menghe for his biography, saying that “of all the doctors in Jiangnan at the end of the Qing dynasty, Boxiong was the most famous”. As the leader of the Menghe school of medicine, Fei Boxiong was called by the empire twice to Beijing to treat the Empress Dowager and the Emperor. Fei Bo Xiong’s medical specialty was the treatment of deficiency labor, at a time when the imperial emperor and the country he ruled seemed to be suffering from the same disease. Fei Bo Xiong understood the essence of medicine to be “smooth and mellow”, which was his lifelong medical thought and style. Fei Bo Xiong said, “There is no miraculous method in the world, but only the method of blandness, and the extreme of blandness can be miraculous”. The “bland method” means no stimulation, no confrontation, no subjugation of the body, and the treatment of disease under a completely submissive change of the body. This philosophy is very much in line with the clinical treatment of cancer. Fei Bo Xiong lived to the age of 80 and died peacefully at the beginning of autumn that year, after giving a farewell speech to the crowd at his 80th birthday party held by his disciples in Menghe Town. His medical reputation in Jiangnan was inherited by his grandson, Fei Jianfu. After the liberation, as early as in the 1950s, domestic scholars had already started the research of Chinese medicine for the treatment of tumor diseases, and the initial clinical research mainly started from the treatment experiments of famous old Chinese doctors and the single, experimental and partial prescriptions of the folk. In the 1970s, due to the influence of prescription dedication, excavation and finishing activities, especially the application of local herbs in a large number of partial prescriptions, which opened up the idea of tumor diagnosis and treatment, some promising traditional Chinese medicines were systematically researched, such as Xi Shu, Bai Ying, periwinkle, musk, toadstool, etc., which were clinically and experimentally verified. In the late 70’s, with the deepening of research, Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment of tumor has developed by leaps and bounds, and the screening of prescriptions and Chinese medicine has reached the peak, further research and application of anti-cancer drugs for activating blood circulation and eliminating blood stasis, supporting the root and dispelling evil, especially the research on the mechanism of anti-cancer effect of Chinese medicine has started. In clinical practice, from the research of anti-cancer drugs and prescriptions to the re-evaluation and emphasis on evidence-based treatment, the treatment method of combining “evidence-based” and “disease-based” was proposed, so that the research of TCM oncology was on the right track. In the 1980s, the research on TCM tumor entered a more comprehensive and systematic stage. Firstly, on the basis of summarizing the experience of previous practitioners and their own clinical practice, medical doctors put forward some new ideas and broadened their exploration in terms of etiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment. Secondly, influenced by the development of modern oncology, they began to explore the inner mechanism of Chinese medicine against cancer, and the research of Chinese medicine on cancer has been developed unprecedentedly. After the 1990s, the scope of TCM tumor research has been further expanded, and TCM scholars have verified the unique role of TCM in tumor treatment from multiple levels and angles, and clarified the role of TCM in comprehensive tumor treatment, and combined with the latest progress of modern medicine in improving the quality of life of tumor patients, preventing metastasis and recurrence, and anti-tumor polyclinic. In addition, a series of researches have been conducted in the areas of improving the quality of life of tumor patients, preventing metastasis recurrence, anti-tumor multi-drug resistance, intervention of Chinese medicine on tumor neovascularization and reducing toxicity and increasing sensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, etc., and promising achievements have been made. In clinical practice, there are many successful cases of using TCM to treat cancer. I have seen many such cases. An old gentleman, who had just retired, suffered from lymphoma patient, and the effect of chemotherapy alone was not very satisfactory at the beginning, then after combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment, he reached clinical cure and insisted on taking Chinese medicine during the recovery period, and now he has been living a healthy life for 12 years. A farmer patient in Changping, Beijing, who was treated with TCM alone after lung cancer surgery, has also been living healthily for 7 years. Also, an 80-year-old man in Shanxi was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, and after using TCM treatment, his condition was controlled and he has survived for 3 years. There are many such cases, which show that TCM can not only fight against cancer, but also achieve very good clinical effects. The role of TCM in tumor prevention and treatment is mainly manifested in: ① alleviating or improving clinical symptoms and signs of tumor patients, improving immune function and other functions of tumor patients. ②Maintain the quality of life of tumor patients. ③Enhancing and reducing the toxicity of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and achieving exact efficacy in controlling bone marrow suppression after chemotherapy, solving the reaction of digestive system, preventing and controlling peripheral neurotoxicity, and reducing radioactive inflammation. ④Promote the recovery of tumor patients after surgery and prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis. ⑤ Inhibit or stabilize tumor development and achieve “survival with tumor”. When a disease appears as a symptom, traditional medicine always considers the disease as a natural reaction of the body as a whole, and restores the body to its normal state by clearing the chakra and visceral relationships in a way that responds to the changes in the body. This understanding has a very important role in cancer treatment. When it comes to cancer, it is necessary to understand the relationship between the seed and the soil. I think we all know very well that, on the one hand, the normal growth of plants depends on fertile land, sufficient water and good seeds. If the soil and seeds and other various conditions are very suitable, then they will thrive, otherwise, the soil is good, but the seeds are not good of course, the growth is not good; the soil is not good, the good varieties are useless, and finally they still do not grow well. On the other hand, different soil conditions, is the same seed, the final growth results are also different, this is the meaning of “orange for orange, born in Huainan, Huainan North for hedge thorn”. Our body is made up of countless cells, which are like seeds. Under normal circumstances, these seeds can grow normally because of the suitable soil environment and sufficient nutrition, forming the cells needed by the body and successfully completing the body’s metabolism, replacing the aging cells with new ones, thus maintaining the continuity of our life. In fact, cancer cells are the same as normal cells, they are different results of the same origin. As we all know: any cancer in human body is also composed of cells, and a cell is like a seed. The growth of tumor size is the result of continuous cell division (one cell divides into two cells, two divides into four, four divides into eight ……) and increase in number. Thus, it can be seen that cancer cells in the body need to grow continuously and reach a certain number before they can be detected by modern medical examination means (a tumor of centimeter size contains about 109 cancer cells). And for cancer cells to grow continuously in the body, they need suitable internal environment and conditions for it, such as nutrients, hormones, various elements, mediated signaling, gene regulation, etc. If these conditions are not ideal or suitable, the growth of cancer cells will be restricted. Modern research has found that it takes a long period of time, usually about 15-20 years, from the mutation of one cell into cancer cells to the formation of 109 cancer cell-sized tumors in the human body. It indicates that the reason why cancer patients experience cancer cell growth lies firstly in the fact that the internal environment, i.e. soil conditions, has undergone some subtle changes a long time ago, leading to the creation of cancer cells. Meanwhile, the continuous deterioration of the internal environment over a long period of time due to long-term adverse stimulation has made the internal soil conditions more suitable for the rapid growth of cancer cells, so that cancer cells are able to develop and grow rapidly, and cancer occurs! Therefore, the key to prevent and treat cancer lies in timely changing the original internal environment, i.e. soil conditions, which are already suitable for cancer cell growth. If the pollution of this internal environment is not well corrected, it is difficult to solve the problem at root with any treatment. In clinical practice, we often meet such patients who have small lesions, timely surgical resection and strong chemotherapy or radiotherapy after surgery, but the cancer cells are “growing and spreading like crazy”, and the blood flowing in the body is almost filled with cancer cells and spread to every corner of the body, which indicates that the patient This indicates that the soil of the patient’s body at this moment is very favorable for the growth of cancer cells. Why is this the result? The key lies in the fact that we often ignore the fact that while adopting various treatments, we care more about cancer cells and neglect to protect our internal environment, which temporarily controls the growth of cancer cells, but at the same time, leads to the further destruction of internal environment and creates better conditions for the “resurgence” of cancer cells. The treatment may temporarily control the growth of cancer cells, and at the same time, lead to further damage to the internal environment, creating better soil conditions for cancer cells to “revive”. On the contrary, some cancer patients are already in the advanced stage when they are found, and the possibility of treatment has already been lost, but the cancer cells do not develop as rapidly as expected, and even miraculously the cancer lumps become smaller and smaller, and finally disappear. Does this suggest that the soil in the patient’s body has changed at this moment and become unfavorable for the growth of such seeds as cancer cells, so that such a result occurs, which is also the phenomenon of “cancer healing itself” as we often say. The four elements of cancer treatment are: improving the soil, cultivating good seeds, eradicating poisonous roots and maintaining homeostasis. To prevent and cure cancer, one of these four elements is indispensable! The contribution of modern medicine is to eliminate the tumor, that is, to eradicate the toxic root, but ignore the elements!
