Half of us are women, and a quarter of them are in the pediatric and adolescent stages, which is the stage from birth to maturity, and is the process of growth and development of the female organism, especially the development of female reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics, and psychological development. During this period, congenital malformations, inflammation, trauma, tumors, precocious puberty, menstrual disorders and other disorders may occur due to genetics, environment, nutrition, drugs and other factors, and gynecological disorders occurring during this period not only bring pain to patients and parents at the onset, but also affect patients for life. In the past, children with such diseases were scattered in gynecology, surgery, internal medicine, and consultation, and some parents thought that only adults would suffer from gynecological diseases, and some adolescent girls were reluctant to go to adult gynecology for consultation, which made some children’s diseases not be treated in a timely manner. Beijing Children’s Hospital established a pediatric gynecology clinic in May 1995. In the past 16 years, we have treated more than 100,000 children, and the 5.5 days of professional outpatient time per week still cannot fully meet the needs of patients. The types of pediatric gynecological diseases we have treated over the past decade include inflammatory diseases of the reproductive organs, such as various bacterial vaginitis, Candida vaginitis, gonorrheal vaginitis, vaginitis caused by foreign bodies. Emotional cross syndrome, labia minora adhesions, vulvar dystrophy (vulvar leukoplakia), etc. We can detect defects and abnormalities of the genital organs, such as imperforate hymen, congenital absence of vagina, vaginal transverse septum, abnormal development of the uterus, etc.; abnormal pubertal development, such as precocious puberty in girls, which has been increasing in recent years; abnormal pubertal menstruation, such as pubertal dysfunctional uterine bleeding, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, etc.; and, less commonly, tumors of the vagina or ovaries. For the characteristics of common pediatric gynecological diseases, we use a combination of Chinese and Western medicine to achieve good results. For example, based on the characteristics of high incidence and easy recurrence of vulvovaginitis in young girls, we use Chinese medicine with less skin irritation and better antibacterial effect, and use sitz baths for external washing, so that the medicine can reach the disease directly and achieve good results. For some children with untreated vaginitis or unexplained vaginal bleeding, careful gynecological examination, related auxiliary examinations and colposcopy are performed if necessary to exclude foreign bodies and tumors in the vagina. The foreign bodies we have removed from the vagina include pen caps, glass balls, small bells, buttons, pins, hair strands, shredded paper balls, etc. In 2001, we won the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award for our scientific achievement “Clinical and experimental research on the treatment of vulvovaginitis in young girls with the Clean Tong Yin lotion”.
